What does it mean to follow Jesus?

Being a follower of Jesus Christ means receiving the love and grace that’s freely offered to anyone who chooses to believe. This life is marked by compassion, purpose, and surrender with a willingness to allow Him to lead your life. Following Jesus is about learning from His example  by living in connection with God the Father, expressed through love for others, passion for truth, and desire to invite others to walk alongside.

This journey transforms us, shaping our thoughts, actions, and relationships through the power of the Holy Spirit. It’s not about following rules or pretending to be perfect. It’s about knowing the One who knows you fully and still chooses you to become His dearly loved daughter.

“But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8
 

Become a follower of Jesus.

It starts with choosing a new way of thinking that’s shaped by the words of Jesus in the Bible. As we let go of old patterns of beliefs, we begin to trust what God says about who He is and who we are as His children. This change doesn’t happen overnight. It’s a process of embracing the truth of why He came to earth and receiving His grace, love, and purpose He offers. 

Step by step, we grow to reflect His heart and His character:

Learn about Jesus. Take time to discover who Jesus really is by reading about His life and teachings in the Bible, beginning with the writings of some of His closest followers—Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. As you see His life’s purpose unfold in love and truth, you’ll learn why He is worth trusting and following.

Trust what Jesus did. Jesus came to heal the broken relationship between people and God by offering forgiveness for sin. He willingly gave His life so that anyone who turns to Him in faith can be set free from guilt and shame. When we put our faith and trust in Him, we receive a new beginning filled with hope, purpose, and the promise of eternal life.

Begin living with a Jesus-focused mindset. Following Jesus is about building a real relationship, not just a one-time decision. Talk to Him in prayer, read His words, and learn from others who follow Him too. Over time, you’ll see your heart and life begin to change as you walk daily in His way.
 

Be part of a community that follows Jesus.

Being a follower of Jesus does not mean that you must align yourself with a particular denomination, religious movement, or political circle. Take ICM for example. We are a non-profit ministry governed by a Board of Directors and leadership team who come from different church denominations, political persuasions, and who are committed to a local gathering of believers.
