A Touch by God

Do you remember the breathtaking image of The Creation of Adam by Michelangelo? God’s finger reaches from heaven towards Adam’s, capturing divine life touching humanity.

This painting is more remarkable as we understand the story behind it. Michelangelo was a sculptor, not a painter. He was confident with blocks of marble, not frescoes. In fact, he was originally commissioned to build 40 statues for the Pope’s massive tomb. Through the turmoil of a jealous artist, religious politics, and unexpected turns, Michelangelo found himself learning a new craft he never asked for and the daunting task of painting the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome.
Initially, the commission was to paint the Twelve Apostles on the ceiling’s support posts. But Michelangelo caught a vision for something bigger. He persuaded Pope Julius to give him creative freedom, surrendered to the work, and allowed God to create a masterpiece. Today, we see nine sweeping scenes from Creation to Noah, surrounded by twelve men and women who prophesied the coming of Jesus.
A sculptor became a painter.
A man surrendered to something entirely new.
This story reveals the work that God continues throughout the Bible, rewriting stories:
· A shepherd becomes King.
· A prisoner saves nations from famine.
· An orphan becomes queen and rescues her people.
· A fearful, timid man becomes a valiant warrior.
· A virgin becomes the mother of the Prince of Peace.
· A fisherman who denied Jesus stands as a bold preacher to thousands.
God’s touch transforms.
Like the scene of Michelangelo’s masterpiece, God still sparks life from Himself into humans. Let’s look at “the finger of God” in the Bible:
In the Old Testament, God wrote the 10 Commandments on stone with his finger (Exodus 31:18). His hand represents His power; His finger represents His precise, intentional action.
When Jesus was accused of casting out demons by demonic power, He responded:
Luke 11:20, “If I cast out the demons by the finger of God, then the kingdom of God has come upon you.”
The finger of God—the Spirit of God—brings freedom, healing, deliverance, and life. Daughters of God, His touch is the spark of life.
Throughout the New Testament, Jesus touched the unclean, the diseased, the blind, the broken. He still touches people today with His power, the same compassion, the same transforming presence.
The question is not whether God is reaching towards you.
The question is—will you reach out to Him, today?
God extends His hand:
· To rewrite your story.
· To awaken what has gone dormant.
· To transform the ordinary into new.
A touch from God can change everything.
