Four Simple Words

There are moments when I’m reading the Bible that stop me in my tracks. Most days, the Bible teaches, guides and corrects me. But then there are the sacred moments when I am struck speechless—when everything goes still and I know I have just stepped onto holy ground.
That’s what happened in Exodus 6.

The story begins in the previous chapter when everything is falling apart. Moses had obeyed God and delivered the message God gave him to speak. Instead of a breakthrough, everything got worse. The Israelites were forced to make the same number of bricks without being given straw. The people were exhausted, discouraged, and angry—and they turned on Moses, questioning if he had heard from God at all.
Moses turns to God and cries out,
“Lord, why have You brought harm to this people? Why did You ever send me? You have not rescued Your people at all.” – Exodus 5:22-23
Can you feel the swirling? The confusion? The doubts?
I can relate. Maybe you can too.
Maybe you obeyed God… and things got harder.
Maybe you stepped out in faith… and the door slammed shut.
Maybe you trusted God… and it didn’t look anything like you prayed for.
When the questions rise, and the doubts surface, God doesn’t always answer like we expect. To Moses, God spoke four simple words:
“I am the LORD.” – Exodus 6:2
I sensed the weight of God’s presence as these words collided with my heart. A holy hush fell and everything inside me grew still as they settled deep in my soul.
The Hebrew name used here for “LORD” is Yahweh—the self-Existent One. The God who has always been and will always be. The One who brings His promises to pass. The One who is not shaken when we are.
Three times in Exodus 6:2–8, God repeats, “I am the LORD.”
It is His answer.
To Moses.
To me.
Peace doesn’t come because every question is resolved. Peace exists because God exists—the Great I AM—holds all things together (Colossians 1:16–17).
Like Moses, I trust because I’ve had a sacred moment where I encountered God on holy ground. I am reminded who God is. And His answer is enough.
On the Be InterConnected Podcast, Michelle walks through the book of Exodus — the struggles, the questions, the delays, and the faithfulness of God in the middle of it all.
Moses’ story isn’t just history — it relates today to our lives. I’d love for you to subscribe and grow with the ICM community of women.
